In the Alaskan Peninsula grizzly bears may approach or just exceed 680 kg (1,500 lb). The females are on average 38% smaller, at about 115-160 kg (250-350 lb). 6 months old cubs (like the one photographed) weight about 55 kg (120 lbs) On average, grizzly bears stand about 1 metre (3.3 ft) at the shoulder when on all fours and 2 metres (6.6 ft) on their hind legs, but males often stand 2.4 metres (7.9 ft) or more on their hind legs.

The grizzly's coloring ranges widely depending on geographic areas, from white to almost black, and all shades in between. The grizzly also has a large hump over the shoulders, which is a muscle mass used to power the forelimbs in digging. This muscle is commonly used to dig for their various vegetative food sources. The hind legs are more powerful, however. The muscles in the lower legs provide enough strength for the bear to stand up and even walk short distances on its hind legs, giving it a better view of its surroundings. The head is large and round with a concave, disk-shaped, facial profile. In spite of their massive size, these bears can run at speeds of up to 55 kilometres per hour (34 mph). However, they are slower running downhill than uphill because of the large hump of muscle over the shoulders.

The two cubs were being chased by a male, as the sow was fishing. After running away, they both stood up, touching paws for a few seconds, to see if the big male was still chasing them. The image was photographed with a 500mm /f4 lens putting the cubs about 50 yards away.
As a photographer, I had to make a quick decision on what to focus on. There were a lot of activities happening simultaneously: the sow had just caught a fish, the big male was running full speed towards the cubs and sow, the two cubs were anxiously waiting to be fed, and then the cubs got scared and run away from all these activities.

I did pick the cubs, as it was a continuation of my intent to photograph their interactions over the course of the week. Then, it was a matter of not being distracted by "other shots".

As I mention during our workshops, start focusing on a concept vs. just an image. They find your areas of weakness and explain fixes in easy to understand terms, never overloading your abilities or level of understanding. They are enthusiastic and energetic. You can't go wrong with one of their workshops. They are tops!!!
Jean Myers
http://community.webshots.com/user/birdermom

Barbi & I had a GREAT time with you and Yamil this past weekend... thank you for an informative and helpful workshop... we both learned some new tips and had a really fun time with you and the group.
Dave & Barbi Kutilek
www.BirdingPix.com

Gosh I had such a great time with you folks on the Bird 101 Workshop. I learned so much in such a short time and am excited to try my hand a bit more at bird photography!
Cokie Lepinski
www.cokielepinski.com

Thanks again for a great workshop! I had a fun time and captured some beautiful shots of many different species of birds I've never seen before.

Paul Veilleux
http://pveilleuxnaturephoto.com/

I want you to know that I loved everything that you guys taught us. My learning curve shot way up, and I understand the strategies of shooting much better now. I went out into my garden in the afternoon and experimented with some settings and got much better results than in the past. You are both very good teachers and observers of behavior. As you can imagine, that's something that appeals to me.
I plan to take more of your workshops in the future, and I have cards that I'll give to my birding friends. Your trips look wonderful, too.
Pat Bacchetti

Oliver, it was a wonderful weekend. I enjoyed it very much. You and Yamil are excellent instructors, and I want to tell you how much I learn from listening to your critiques. You really have a gift of making people know what's good about their photos, and pointing out areas for improvement, while keeping people's dignity intact. Thanks again.
JUDI L. BAKER

Oliver: I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. I really wanted to learn about exposure and how to shoot photos without depending on the fully automatic settings. I certainly got experience in that aspect. Thanks so much for sending the list of birds that we had the opportunity to photograph.
Ola Jane

People's Choice Award - PhotoCentral Spring Show 2008

Press Release

** Oliver Klink wins People's Choice Award at PhotoCentral Spring Show 2008**

Oliver Klink is known for his wildlife photographs. Now in its 4th year, the show features images by 18 Bay Area photographers who don’t just look at the world, but see it, and translate their seeing into beautifully crafted photographic images. One of Palo Alto’s most popular annual art events, the opening typically draws huge crowds to meet the artists and experience the wide range of vision, style, and theme embodied in their work. Most return later with friends and family to revisit the photographs and choose pieces for their own art collections.

As the reputation of this show has grown, the competitiveness of the juried selection process has increased dramatically. The show is the culmination of Art 44 in Stanford University’s Continuing Education Program–a class in which photographers learn about the business aspects of the fine art world. Taught by Brigitte Carnochan and the owners of Modernbook Gallery (Mark Pinsukanjana and Bryan Yedinak), the students prepare for the show and also learn how to market their work.

According to Carnochan, “most of the participants in this class have full-time jobs and families but nonetheless find time to pursue their photographic passion. I started my own career in the same way. Taking a class at the end of a long day is hard work but rewarding. This year’s group has chosen especially diverse subject matter and includes something for everyone—from an early method called bromoil to traditional black and white darkroom work to digital techniques. More than a display of each artist’s advanced technical proficiency, this show emphasizes personal vision and artistic intent.”

From gritty reality to ethereal abstract conceptions, the works capture the imagination. There are wildlife series (African animals, tiny hummingbirds), landscapes (Bay Area environmental portraits, nature scenes, abstracts reminiscent of aerial views or moonscapes), trees and garden scenes (dramatic vistas, as well as intimate, macro details), and urban scenes (from barrooms and storerooms to public spaces around the world). More than anything else the work reveals insights and inspirations from the artists’ diverse life experiences–high, mid and low tech, medicine, law, business, education, and art. These enthusiastic artists offer the community an opportunity to experience and share exciting art—and perhaps even take some of it home.

Modernbook Gallery: Located in the heart of downtown Palo Alto, Modernbook is a gallery and bookstore offering fine art photography and elegant books about fashion, photography, design and architecture. Modernbook offers a relaxed atmosphere in which to view a carefully chosen assortment of modernist photographs and books.

Nature's Whisper and Roar: Review by the Daily Review

HAYWARD — Patrons of the arts come in all shapes, sizes and species.

Not unexpectedly, homo sapiens, or humans, crowded Friday night's opening reception at PhotoCentral Gallery for "Nature's Whisper and Roar," a wildlife photography exhibit.
The guest list also included a great horned owl, turkey vulture, American kestrel and domestic dove from Fairview's Sulphur Creek Nature Center.

The birds, residents at the wildlife rehabilitation and education center, were stars in the flesh and in photos. Their high-definition pictures were included among 100 photographs of animals and birds from Alaska to Africa, and Yosemite to the hills above Hayward.
The birds were brought from an adjoining room by ones and twos, center Coordinator Wendy Winsted said, to reduce the stress level.

"They're used to crowds," Winsted explained, "but not too much (at one time)."

The work of photographers Oliver Klink of San Jose and Munir Kureshi are featured in the exhibit. Klink photographed the center's birds, and is donating proceeds from the sales of these pictures back to the center.

Klink also photographed "The Players,"11/2-year-old grizzly cubs, in Alaska last summer. For seven days, he followed the cubs and their mother to observe their behavior. He captured many images, including a playful moment depicted in the exhibit photo.

Earlier this month, Kureshi visited Monterey, where he took a picture of a mother sea otter and her pup. The mother manages to keep the pup on her belly while turning in the waters of Monterey Bay.

Kureshi learned about hummingbirds while photographing them in the Santa Cruz Mountains, as well as Arizona, in recent years. On some days, he observed more than 100 hummingbirds at a time, in areas specially planted to attract the energetic, 2-inch-long birds with iridescent feathers. "The technical challenge is to freeze their flapping wings, and capture unusual postures often undetected by the human eye," Kureshi said. He learned to distinguish the different types of hummingbirds as they hovered in midair to display territorial dominance, courtship rituals, or merely feeding.

PhotoCentral Gallery hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Monday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is at 1099 E St. "Nature's Whisper and Roar" will be exhibited through March 2. He says, "Giving Nature the ability to speak through my camera is what inspires me." Klink travels to many parks and countries to teach workshops and photograph animals in the wild. He sites Frans Lanting and Tom Mangelsen as key inspirations to his photography. His photographic colleague, Munir Kureshi, Los Gatos, who grew up in Ahmedabad, India, is a veterinarian and brings his knowledge and concern for animals to his gentle imagery. Each photographer strives to understand and honor the animals they photograph and share this with their viewers. As Kureshi says: "Nature, from the African plains to the wilderness of Alaska, is powerful, captivating and majestic. Through my photos, I hope to share the beauty and danger that nature provides."
For this exhibit, PhotoCentral is pleased to offer two special edition prints by Oliver Klink and Munir Kureshi. The photographer's new exhibit, Africa Meets Alaska: A Wildlife Experience combines visions of pristine nature - a flower opening like pouting lip or a cloud band at twilight, mottled with the same purples and blacks that color the bruised part of a fruit - with surreptitious shots of eagles eviscerating their prey, or two zebras catching a stolen embrace.
Defying the cheesy lyricism of a National Geographic safari, Klink and Kureshi opt for a more expressionistic, often astonishing view of the road less traveled.
Africa Meets Alaska runs through November 17 at XZiBTit Hercules Art Gallery. From then on, they traveled together several times to Alaska. They also went to many natural reserves and national monuments all across the United States.

“The natural complement of skills and personality made us team up. Munir brings his flair and the artistry of film, medium format and digital photography, where my engineering experience eases planning and post processing,” explained Oliver.

From October 6 to November 17 at XZIBTit Hercules Art Gallery, "Where Africa meets America: A wildlife experience," features some of their combined most recent photographs of nature and animals taken in East Africa and Alaska. It is their first exclusive duo presentation at an art gallery.

The 44 color photos capture moments of the daily life of the Big 5 in Africa, the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the buffalo and the rhinoceros and their counterparts in Alaska, the grizzly and the black bears, the moose, the whale and the eagle.

With themes such as love and care, hunting and eating habits, they convey the beauty of nature and wildlife at its purest.

“As far apart as the two continents are, wildlife goes through the same process of life and survival. Africa is seen as abundance of species, where Alaska is survival. The cycle of life is shortened in the latter with the season, where in Africa it is rougher with the competition,” said the photographers.

Born in Lausanne, at the edge of Swiss Alps, Oliver Klink was introduced to nature at an early age and to photography by his father when both were hiking. “I was excited when I could see the wonderful sceneries and memories. I then took on photography when in college, focusing on black and white,” recalled Oliver.

Educated in his home country, Switzerland, as well as in Germany, Canada and the United States, he holds a Masters in Physics engineering and an MBA in business. He has lived and worked in the US since the early 1990s.

Using a Canon (1d Mark III, 1d Mark IIN), his technique is to apply the discipline of film photography to digital.

“Prepare, think, and photograph,” is what Oliver teaches in his workshops the latest of which took place last month. For him, photography is a natural complement to his field of expertise, where he searches for symmetry, clean lines, and perfect composition.

“Perfect science is about simplicity. My photographs invite the viewer with their simplicity,” commented Oliver.

Among his influences in photography, he cites Frans Lanting (USA), for merging art and multimedia and Australian Peter Lik (Australia) whose photos are an expression of “nature at its best,” according to Oliver Klink

As for Munir, he was born and grew up in a very well known family in Ahmedabad, a densely populated city in the State of Gujarat, India, which was at the forefront of the Indian independence and civil disobedience movement in the early twentieth century.

It’s from Ahmadabad that in 1930, Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Salt Satyagraha by embarking from his ashram on the Dandi Salt March and Munir’s great grand father and grand father spent most of their adult life with Gandhi and accompanied him at the Salt Satyagraha.

During his childhood and youth, Munir spent all his free time with one of his father’s friend who was in charge of a local zoo. “He encouraged me to become a veterinarian and that’s exactly what I did,” he said

After earning a BS in Zoology in India, he went to the School of Forestry at the University of Florida and graduated in Natural Resources and Wildlife Management. Back to India, he went to the College of Veterinary Medicine in Bombay, before returning to the United States for an internship in New York and other studies at the University of Missouri.

“Being around animals since childhood, I started taking pictures of them and so, I developed a passion for photography,” added Munir. With animals, you have to be ready for any type of situation, you have to be creative in your technique and knowing their behavior is very important,” he pointed out.

In order to achieve this, he uses a Nikon camera because it’s a quality equipment that allows preciseness and speed.

“Animal photography is lots of fun: go out and enjoy taking pictures. At the same time respect and preserve the wildlife,” concluded Munir Kureshi. Up to 3,000 eagles can be spotted at the Chilkat State Reserve, as they feed on spawning salmon.
The spectacle is incredible with lots of flying and feeding. However, you just need to be well prepared as temperature can deep really low (0 F).
Photographing eagles is very challenging. They are fast flyer and hard to track. The black and brown contrast makes it difficult to meter correctly. And finally, they are in the wild and unpredictable!

Enjoy the show (more pictures)

Oli & Judy.

Ostrander Ski Hut: Yosemite at its Best

Winter is almost behind us. The first stop was the climb of Mt. Meru (4,650m), then a safari to the Northern Parks of Tanzania and finally an outback adventure to Southern Tanzania game reserve and national parks.

Each park visited is very unique and well worth a visit. Our true favorite was the Serengeti, with sighting of leopards at Seronera, the wildebeest migration at Ndutu and prides of lions devouring a kill at Lobo.

The eighth wonder of the world, Ngorongoro Crater, came as a close second. We spotted the last animal of the Big 5 family (Black rhino, elephant, hippo, lion and leopard).

In third place comes Ruaha National Park. Today, you can still experience the “old time” safari, with animals displaying their wild behaviors and hiding from cars and humans.

Arusha, Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Selous game reserve were outstanding for viewing and photography opportunities.

If an African safari is on your future travel list, feel free to contact me for advices and trip planning. This is an experience of a life time not to be missed.

Until the next adventure, travel safe (more pictures).

Oli & Judy.

Eastern Sierra, California

The California Eastern Sierras are a wonder anytime of the year, but particularly during the foliage.

The weather, even so unpredictable, will rarely dissapoint you if you are patient enough.

I experienced incredible lighting in Bishop on October 1st. 10 minutes after the sunset, the entire sky turned bright red.

It was an apocaliptic moment when the foreground started to light too.

I always thought that Galen Rowell used saturated filters to display these incredible sunsets in the Eastern Sierra.

Now, I know that it is actually real.

What a pleasant surprise !
